Född Slav

Born Slave

In Mauretania, a country situated in the Western part of the Sahara desert, slavery has been part of daily life for hundreds of years. Any children born to a female slave belongs to her master. In this film we meet Bilal, a sixteen-year-old boy. He was only two years old when his mother fled and left him with his owner. Bilal has now also escaped and he has found his mother in a slum area in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauretania. Bilal and his mother Shaba tell us about their lives as slaves, about the abuse and the humiliation. The team had to disguise themselves as tourists and the filming was made in secret.
