In the Neuquen province, in Argentine Patagonia, workers at the Zanon ceramics plant opposed their employer’s plan to lay off 50% of the staff to avoid closing the factory due to economic problems. Since the end of 2001, the workers have occupied the factory and ensured production without their boss. With only 15% of the production capacity, they have succeeded in hiring jobless people in the region and offering them an equal salary of 800 pesos. The have thus demonstrated that it is possible, during a depression, to offer jobs and contribute to social stability when the State stops proposing a solution. In Argentina, some 100 factories have followed the example of Zanon and are producing under worker supervision.
