Fadhel Jaïbi, un théâtre en libertéFadhel Jaïbi, A Theater of Freedom
This film invites us to discover the work of Tunisian author and director Fadhel Jaïbi. He is a great believer in what he calls the “actor’s power of dramatic creation” and his distinctive plays are built largely on improvisation. His work, written in collaboration with Jalila Baccar, his wife and favourite actress, is truly a breath of fresh air in a land where freedom of speech is too often repressed. Irreverent and cathartic, his plays have been greeted for the last thirty years with great popular success in Tunisia and are now gaining international recognition. Although his plays are regularly showcased in theatres around the world, it is nevertheless at home that Fadhel Jaïbi is more than ever determined to pursue the future challenges of his art. There, his theatre, self-proclaimed “elitist for all,” represents more than a cultural goal - it is freedom that is at stake.
