No other artist in Switzerland has come close to matching both the high-level artistic respect and the enormous popularity enjoyed by Jean Tinguely. The proverbial "man in the street" speaks of Tinguely as easily as an art historian does. Such a broad spectrum of public attention is rare, and to the degree enjoyed by Tinguely, it is downright exceptional. Not surprisingly, very many films have been made about Jean Tinguely. But as Guido Magnaguagno, director of the Tinguely Museum in Basel, points out, most of these films are simply snapshots of the artist during the particular period in which the film was shot. What has been missing – until now – is a comprehensive documentary tracing Tinguely's development as an artist and situating individual works within the overarching context of his artistic career. In other words: a biography on film.
