Encore plus pour Tirana
39-year-old Edi Rama is the mayor of Tirana, the capital of Albania. In three years, and on an absurdly small budget, he managed to completely transform the city, adding colors to the walls and destroying illegal constructions. A singer with a rap group and a painter, he designs his own clothing just as he redesigned Tirana, with lots of feeling, taste and grim determination. “I am a tragic optimist,” he says. Despite two assassination attempts, Rama has made a bit for re-election in his hometown. This film follows his campaign, a phase in an attempt to make Tirana not only a model for Albania, but for all the Balkans. For years, the solutions offered by the international community haven’t improved things much in the region. With Edi Rama and the Tirana experiment, and for the first time since the early 90s and the wars that scarred the Balkans, a man has come to power in his own country.
