Over the past 12 years, some 3000 members of the legally established political party, the Union Patriotica, have been systematically gunned down and no one has yet been accused or arrested. The UP was created in the wake of the 1986 peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the leftist guerrilla organization FARC. The UP soon became the largest independent party in the country, placing, through popular elections, senators, congressmen, mayors and two presidential candidates. All these people were murdered.
