Dostom, le seigneur de Mazar
The portrait of an Afghan warlord in the great tradition of Joseph Kessel. At 48, Abdul Rachid Dostom, the lord of Mazar-e-Sharif, the major city in north Afghanistan, has retained his proud bearing. Of Uzbek origin, Dostom — a nickname that means “Everyone’s friend” — has always distinguished himself by his cruelty and shifting alliances. He has been pro-communist, joined the Mudjahidins of Massoud before betraying him and joining the ultra-fundamentalist Guldbuddin Hekmatyar. The master of Mazar managed to remain in place during the first years of the Taliban regime, before being himself betrayed and forced into exile.
