Dinorah
“What led me to stage Dinorah or The Pardon of Ploërmel, was, firstly, the score, which, in my opinion, one of Meyerbeer’s most successful works due to the quality of the orchestration and the well-balanced libretto by Barbier and Carré. Dinorah is the Meyerbeer opera closest to our modern sensibility. So, for the staging, I conceived of a vision in the “heroic fantasy” and neo-romantic style such as we are seeing making a comeback everywhere, especially among the younger generations through books, films and traditional festivities that hail directly from Celtic and Breton legends. Drawing my inspiration from the work of the great English painter Turner, the precursor of contemporary painting, I involved the audience in a spate of magical locations. This production is the biggest show ever presented at the Théâtre imperial in Compiègne incorporating extravaganza, dance, pantomime, special effects, and of course, virtuoso French singing for one of the greatest opera composers of the 19th century.” Pierre Jourdan
