Diari di guerra : da Erbil a BaghdadWar Journals: from Erbil to Baghdad
This special follows several TV reports shot in Iraq by TG1 special envoys. War Journals: From Erbil to Baghdad is the story of the war on the Northern Iraqi front, with many witnesses and dramatic footage shot following the maneuvers of the Peshmerga, the Kurd guerrillas, as they try to approach the big oil towns of Mosul and Kirkuk. This journal covers two months of battles between the Kurds and the Iraqis, before the American involment; in the meantime, a long series of frightening events and tragic mistakes took place. The TG1 crew was involved in a battle right on the front line, and on April 6, an American plane opened fire on a convoy of Peshmerga and journalists. There were 18 dead —the worst accident caused by "friendly fire" since the beginning of the conflict. The journal also deals with the ethnical conflict between Arabs and Kurds, which seems ready to revive again after the fall of the Baghdad regime, all the chaos and the plundering in Kirkuk and Mosul, which led to reaction of the few Americans guarding the two towns, and the death of scores of people. The story ends in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown and refuge, where the last battle is still far from over…
