Der Gute Vater
Beate Niemann, born in 1942, began to investigate her family’s history to rehabilitate her father, Bruno Sattler. Sattler, removed by force from West Berlin in 1947, spent the rest of his days in East German prisons. “Our poor innocent father", they used to say in the family. But Beate Niemann’s quest uncovered an entirely different story. Her father was a major criminal who worked for the Nazis. The film relates the life of this good family man-cum-war criminal. Yoash Tatari retraces Sattler’s criminal career, unmediated by commentary. His sledge-hammer montage translates the shock his daughter felt in the face of the horrible truth.
