De FotoSunday, September 22
The photograph was published in several newspapers after September, 22nd. Taken in Sicily, it shows a drawn person that a man and a woman tries to revive, too late. This man was put overboard a ship, a quarter of a mile off the cost, together with 76 other Tunisians, who were on their way to Italy in search of a better life. Most of them could not swim. Fourteen of them drowned. Mesmerized by this photo, the filmmaker travels to Sicily and Tunisia to understand its story. In the home village of the drowned man, young men battle boredom, which is a greater enemy to them than hunger or poverty. Sitting in front of the television, they see their dream visualized in the glamour of Western Europe, on the Italian tv-networks. They hear of the difficulties of life as an illegal immigrant in Italy, but their dreams are stronger. On their television, they see their future in color and wait for their turn to cross the Mediterranean See.
