Ces brevets me rendent maladeThese Patents Make Me Sick
How do international trade laws (the fixed pricing system, patents…) affect the daily lives of millions of sick people? Why are African governments so slow in taking action that would enable them to supply health facilities with antiretroviral drugs? Are these structures capable of implementing complex treatments? Do the medical staff have sufficient training? These questions have been raised in an attempt to understand the absence of antiretroviral treatments in the world’s poorest countries. The film endeavours to respond to these questions, step by step, through personal accounts of patients and doctors who confront the disease on a daily basis. While the availability and cost of antiretroviral drugs remain a major obstacle, African governments also need to make a firm commitment to fighting the disease. Expert analyses emerge alongside these individual cases that illustrate the fate of millions of Africans. Economists, politicians and doctors clarify for us this battle surrounding intellectual property and other issues that have major consequences on access to healthcare. Their remarks highlight the roles of the different players involved in the functioning of the pharmaceutical drug market.
