Aziza, sculpteurs au BéninAziza, Sculptors from Benin
An encounter with contemporary artists deeply committed to the cultural heritage of their country, Benin. Concerned about the modernity of their work and the economic future of their homeland, they seek to avoid the sclerosis too often produced by the rituals and traditions in certain African-and European-regions. Georges Adéagbo, Dominique Kouas, Calixte Dakpogan, Cyprien Tokoudagba, Romual Hazoumé continue their work in Cotonou, Porto Novo and Abomey, but also in countries to which they are invited to major international contemporary art events. Benin writers such as Joseph Adandé and Florent Coua-Zotti mediate the discovery of this art heavily associated with vodun, the divinity of animist worship, and to their benchmark sculpture, one of the major works of African art, the sculpture of the God Gou, on view at the Louvre museum.
