Amiante, le prix du silenceAsbestos, Deadly Silence
More than 100,000 asbestos-related deaths are expected in France between now and 2005. The disaster affects asbestos workers in the construction and automobile parts trade, naval yards; but also their entourage, their children, those who live near the factories. How did the situation get so bad? To find the answer, Daniel Cattelain returned to the city where he spent his teen years, Condé-sur-Noireau, a large town in Normandy where asbestos has been produced for more than a century. He found the players of the period, workers, employers, doctors, patients. The answers, as gleaned from their memories, show that the truth was long known. But what truth? Known by whom? And what did those who knew it do about it? Why did we wait so long before making asbestos illegal? The documentary is an analysis of this "mortal inertia."
