Yu Guan and Yu Yan
The Dai ethnic people living in Yunnan Province, China, believe in the Hinayana philosophy of Buddhism. Girls were not allowed to study in the temples. However, two sisters named Yu Guan and Yu Yan ignored this tradition, and went to the temples to study painting from the Buddhist masters. The younger sister, Yu Yan, the more talented artist, later gave up painting and returned home to become a farmer. Yu Guan, however, followed her dream to become a renowned painter. Yu Guan, 40, never married and devote her life to her career. Both sisters look back on their own lives with deep regret. Yu Yan hopes that one day her daughter may become a famous artist. Yu Guan, on the other hand, cultivates the simple hope of returning to farming life in her pastoral home village.
