Welcome out / in Sangatte
A journey to the "humanitarian emergency shelter" at Sangatte. I entered the center for the first time in October 2001 with special permission from the Red Cross, in charge of this camp for refugees, most of whom come from Iraqi Kurdistan and Afghanistan. Every night at Sangatte, the last stop in continental Europe before England, refugees risk their lives to try to cross over to the British island, where they hope to find protection and asylum. I went back in 2002, with a camera crew and Shohreh, a young Kurd and Persian interpreter. We are with them, both in the center, and outside, waiting with them and sharing their hope (and despair) of reaching the "other side."
