Vies d'eunuques
In India, they are called "hijras"-they are the last eunuchs. In the land of the maharajahs, they once had a recognized and respected social function-in particular, as guardians of the harem. Today the eunuch community represents no more than a million people, often living on the fringes of Hindu society. The "hijras" live according to age-old rites. Their only means of existence is to cash in on their presence at certain ceremonies, baptisms, weddings, and business openings or else they engage in prostitution. For the first time, the team of Arte Reportage was able to film a castration: an illegal operation practiced in secret, without anesthesia and in unsafe hygienic conditions.
