A marketplace of smells, sounds and of various languages. Osip Mandelstam was here; and Paul Celan. And Marc Chagall, the believer. And Leon Trotzky, the disbeliever. They moved along this street like thousands before them who had come to Paris since the end of the 19th century. Feeling the pogroms in the ghettos of East Europe. Fleeing Vilnius, Kiev, Riga, Warsaw, Lodz...They brought the Yiddish language and their poverty: memories and homesickness. But the Marais was just like to the places they came from...
