At the end of the nineteenth century, two musicians of world renown were born in the Basque Country : Maurice Ravel and José Maria Usandizaga. The lives of both of them were influenced by the same vicissitudes of European history during the first third of the tweeter century – political fragmentation of Europe, the first World War, new tendencies like impressionism and expressionism – which led them to be attracted to the music of Gustav Malher and Claude Debussy. Many artists like Placido Domingo and musical institutions like the Symphonic Orchestra of Euskadi have contributed to this well tribute to these Basque composers.
