Une histoire d'aujourd'hui, Sabra et Chatila
On September 20, 1982, I was horrified to read about the massacres of Sabra and Chatila in the papers. Personal shock, feeling of shame. These facts form a black mark in the history of my country, Lebanon. Because there had been no official inquiry, apart from the Kahane commission which was under pressure of the Israeli public opinion, and because the facts have been trotted out by many journalists, it did not seem necessary, 20 years on, to make this film an investigation. A filmmaker, even a Lebanese one, can't claim to have the means to judge those responsible for this carnage. It seems to me more important to describe the frames of mind of the survivors, their relationship with their dead. If this film evokes the dead it is because they are omnipresent in the minds of the witnesses.
