Troc en Argentine
After having been one of the most thriving nations in South America, Argentina is today mired in an unprecedented economic crisis: one out of every three Argentinians lives beneath the poverty line, 40% of the working population is unemployed. To survive, the Argentinians have rediscovered that most elementary of systems: barter economy. Throughout the country, barter clubs-"nodos"-have been emerging. People come here to exchange clothing for food, medical and dental care for various paraphernalia. A non-official currency, the credito, has replaced the national currency, the peso, which lost all value following the country's economic and banking crash. Today, some six million Argentinians survive on barter. Argentina has become a full-size laboratory for this "solidarity economy" some have dreamed of.
