The Spirit Wrestlers
The Dukhobors believed in the predominance of the soul over material goods. They were pacifists and vegetarians who practiced a Christianity of the heart, not as it was written in books. In 1899, they fled Russian persecution and settled in Canada to build a Christian community dedicated to "toil and peaceful life." Instead they faced a century of forced assimilation policies, including the seizure of their children. Their resistance led to escalating tensions with successive governments that resulted in the most sustained campaign of terrorist bombings and arson attacks ever seen in Canada. The Spirit Wrestlers presents the complex history of a community struggling to live according to its beliefs. In the process, it exposes some shocking abuses of power by the Canadian government.
