The Secret of the Flying Dutchman
Perhaps the most famous of all maritime legends is that of the Flying Dutchman, the ghost ship that many believe has been lurking for centuries in the treacherous waters off the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa haunting sailors with its promise of a watery grave for those who venture too near. The Dutch were not very popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and it was the English who maintained that the legendary phantom was not just any ghost ship but in fact, a Dutch vessel captained by a man called Van der Decken. The Cape of Good Hope is one of the largest marine graveyards with more than 5000 ships having met their doom there because of the extreme natural conditions. So, is the Flying Dutchman just a mirage after all? Our modern technologies tell us there is no room for such a ship, or is there?
