The Quarry

In a small town in northern Ontario, a 12-year-old boy named Douglas lives with his 5-year-old sister Heidi, their mother Marge and their grandfather, Joe. Douglas, who is distressed by a family secret, rarely speaks, and if he does, only in a military jargon. The children have a hiding place called the base, a quarry near a swamp. Marge works in a cafeteria with her neighbor, another isolated mother with a 16-year-old son, Tod. Marge loves her two children and worries about Douglas. Joe sees his behavior differently and is unable to conceal his hostility when Douglas blindfolds his sister and takes her into the woods. The days go by in an escalation of incidents. Douglas tries to tell his mother the secret that is undermining his life, but she won't listen. In despair, he turns to Tod. When Marge realizes that her son wanted to take her out to the hangar, she realizes the truth: Joe has been abusing Heidi. Douglas and Tod end up in the quarry, which becomes the site of a final reckoning.
