The Practicality of Magnolia

Isobel is a recently widowed woman in her sixties. One day, while tending to her garden, she receives the visit of an out-of-breath young man who is looking for a room to rent. He is quick to admit that he hasn't any money. Isobel suggests that he can pay for the room by repainting the house--she can't stand the magnolia color anymore. It's one way of making a clean break with the past and start anew. To the young man's surprise, the paint cans are already there, waiting: orange, blue, red, yellow, violet. As the house changes colors, the two people grow closer to one another. But each still harbors a secret. The young man's strange past returns bit by bit and a car accident provides a clue to Isabel's secret. No sooner is the paint job completed then the police provide a conclusion and a terrible truth.
