The Overcoat
The Overcoat is a performing arts masterpiece, inspired by the work of the 19th century Russian writer Gogol, and set to the music of Dmitry Shostakovitch. Without dialogue, it is a modern film that draws on the great cinematic traditions of both the musical and the silent movie. At the heart of the work is the skinnt figure of actor Peter Anderson, in the role of a social outcast who only lives for the elegant overcoat he buys himself. Like Chaplin, he has a sweet innocence that overcomes the vicious taunts of society. By turns brutal, sexy, tender and sad, Anderson and the ensemble cast engage the viewer in the paradox that the fulfillment of material dreams can bring about a man's destruction. The same "overcoat" that liberates Anderson, also enslaves him in his madness.
