The King of Belle-Ile
John Russell (1858-1930) was the first Australian impressionist painter. He lived for more than 20 years on Belle-Ile, a rocky Atlantic island off the coast of Brittany. An eye witness to the major changes in art in France in the late 19th century, Russel maintained friendship with such artists as Monet, Van Gogh, Rodin and the his fellow countryman Tom Roberts. The Fauvist innovator, Henri Matisse visited him on Belle-Ile as a student: it was Russell who advised him to lighten his palette and paint in the vivid colors for which he became renowned.
