The Falklands Play

More than 20 years ago, in April 1982, Britain went to war with Argentina to regain the Falkland Islands. The Falkland Play is an account of how the Thatcher government handled the biggest crisis in British foreign affairs since Suez. Argentina, then a British ally, invaded the Falklands, which was sovereign British territory since 1833, to divert attention from its troubled economy, unemployment and increasing popular unrest. Ian Curteis' play charts the strategies adopted by the different parties: how the military and the Thatcher government sought the support of the international community; and how the United States tried to lead a mission of conciliation. The play was commissioned in 1986 by the BBC, but, accused of political bias, it was never filmed until now.
