Johan Tilder, a professional soldier trained in the Dutch commandos, served in the Foreign Legion and with NATO forces. He left the Netherlands in 1991 to fight with the Croatians. In 1993, he was implicated in the first ethnic cleansing operations committed by the Croatians in the enclave of Medak. In April 1994, he disappeared mysteriously. He was held captive by the Serbians for six weeks, and his interrogation concerning the Medak operation was recorded on video. On May 10, 1994, he was killed during an escape attempt. Two friends who fought in the same unit talk about Johan and try to reconstitute the circumstances of his death. Their own lives as well as Johan's cast a harsh, uncompromising light on the way war changes people.
