Pöhlers Passagen
In 1909, during a dramatic phase of his life, the itinerant photographer Friedrich Pöhler failed to take up residence in the community of pietistic brethren in Wilhelmsdorf, Upper Swabia. Pölhers Passagen relates the life led by the pious brothers of Wilhelmsdorf and the farmers and the craftsmen in the neighbouring Catholic villages, as well as the conflict between strait-laced pietistic morals and the crude reality of the villages. In this setting, the unhappy romance between the travel-weary photographer and Anna, the tavern maid driven out by the pietists, comes to a dramatic conclusion. Pöhler resumed his travels. He left 350 glass negatives, which were discovered in an attic in 1993, and on which the film is based.
