Palmasola - Dorf hinter Gittern
The daily life of car thief Carlos Cambia in the "prison city" of Palmasola, in eastern Bolivia. In the late 80s, an wholly unconventional penitentiary was built in Palmasola. Because of corruption, operating funds disappeared even before the prison could be inaugurated, so the inmates began to manage the place themselves. Due to the shortage of guards, the authorities allowed the families of convicts to settle there in order to keep the 1,047 convicts in line. In this city run according to its own rules, there are private homes, stores, and restaurants. Everything is for sale: respect, bodyguards, cocaine, and hit men. The guards remain outside the walls. This reportage focuses on Carlos Cambia, who has been here at Palmasola for four years and runs the prison's in-house newspaper. He feels pretty comfortable there.
