Palle Nielsen (1920-2000) is one of the greatest Danish woodcut artists of his time. He was, with painter and sculptor Svend Wiig Hansen (1922-1997), the initiator of figurative expressionism, the last major Danish artistic movement of the 1950s, which centered on human life in the light of the destructive forces of modern civilization. Inspired by the Renaissance, his woodcuts deal with the theme of urban society in the impending apocalypse of atomic war. They express a kind of calm before the storm, underlined by an explosive atmosphere born of the furtive encounter of men and cities. Both visual poem and journey into the artist's extraordinary world, the film pays tribute to the work of an artist who has aroused great interest abroad.
