Nostalgia? A Tango Road Movie
Since his performance at the wedding of Holland's heir apparent Willem Alexander and Máxima, bandoneón player Carel Kraayenhof's star has been rising. It was the crowning glory of his career : Kraayenhof had been playing the Latin-American tango for 15 years. To mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Astor Piazzolla, in July 2002, Kraayenhof and his Sexteto Canyengue travel to Argentina, where his success has not gone by unnoticed either. Director Wouter Hasebos follows him on tour in a bankrupt country which apparently does not have much reason for celebration. But nothing will keep the Argentinians from relishing the tango. As in a musical road movie, Carel Kraayenhof begins a quest for the essence of the tango, which involves nostalgia, homesickness, and displacement.
