No Way Back
Between 1938 and 1944, thousands of Jews attempted to escape certain death by boarding ships flying the Bulgarian flag in the hope of reaching Palestine. Traffickers began to systematically smuggle these Jews out of Europe. How did the Bulgarian authorities and the crews of these vessels treat the fugitives? This film also deals with the tragedy of the "Struma," which in 1941 carried 778 Romanian and Russian Jews. The engine died in Istanbul and the ship remained ancored in the port for 70 days, before being sent back to the Black Sea by Turkish authorities. Two months later, on Feb. 23, 1942, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Russian submarine. Only one person survived.
