[nemt] : « take » is the last four Yiddish letters of an inscription saved from destruction after centuries of Jewish life, taken from a wall in Vilnius. [nemt] is a film about the Yiddish language, identity and universality. Returning to his native Lithuania, one of the filmmakers hunts for clues to an interrupted history, first when part of her family was murdered in 1941, later when the family left the Soviet Union. Using a narrative that blends childhood impressions with the memories of the preceding generation, the film examines the survival of the Yiddish language. The Seminar for Yiddish language and culture that takes place in Vilnius is the showcase for a series of reflections on the vitality and renaissance of this linguistic and spiritual treasure.
