Moby Dick : The True Story
The sinking of the whale ship Essex by an enraged sperm whale is one of the best-known marine disasters of the 19th century. Its enduring infamy is largely the result of Melville's literary classic "Moby Dick". But the account of what happened is even more incredible than folklore and Melville's imagination would allow. On November 20, 1820, the Essex was crossing whale rich territory in the Pacific Ocean when it is rammed and sunk by mammoth 85-ton-whale. Shipwrecked far from land, the crew next endured 90 days of fierce storms, blistering sun and shark attacks, without enough food or water. Eventually, they were forced to drink sea water, causing dehydration, madness and slow death. As provisions ran out and crew begin to dwindle, the remaining survivors face the ultimate dilemma: eat their mates or die.
