Maïa Plissetskaïa Assoluta
For 50 years, the name of Maya Plisetskaya, "ballerina assoluta," was joined to the history of Soviet ballet and one of its most prestigious theaters, the Bolshoi in Moscow. Plisetskaya left her mark on the art of 20th century dance. After having danced the major roles of the repertory, she sought to throw off the yoke of academism and work with contemporary choreographers, beginning a second career at an age when most ballerinas retire from the stage. This same quest for new roles led her to choreograph dance pieces inspired by the great works of Russian literature. Also an actress in Soviet films, her beauty and intelligence inspired painters and photographs. Plisetskaya today divides her time between Germany and Lithuania. A far cry from the usual hagiographic documentary, this film is a meeting with an artist from whom new generations of dancers draw their inspiration and a woman whose complex personality clashed with the absurdities of a totalitarian regime.
