Mabrouk At-Tahrir
May 25th, 2000: after 22 years of occupation, the Israeli army pulls out of South Lebanon. In a village, 10 kms from the border with Israel, two families share the same courtyard. One of the two houses has been empty since January 5th, 1988, the day the Chahrour family was driven out. The Chahrour sons were in the resistance movement, and both of them – like their mother and sister – have spent time in prison. The Kassem family has not had to leave the other house. One of the Kassem sons, a childhood friend of the Chahrour, has collaborated with the occupying forces. How will daily life be organized in the courtyard and in the village? How is it possible to build a future with the threat that Israel could return ? What memory and what sense of identity can a person bequeath to his children?
