Les Femmes des bananeraies
From 1960 to 1980, American multinational banana-growers used the highly toxic pesticide DBCP on their Central American plantations. Thus, in Costa Rica, more than 15,000 male workers are said to have been affected. The women have never been numbered among the victims. Married to the workers, they lived near the zones sprayed by planes. They worked on the plantations, helping their husbands, bringing them their lunch every day. Evenings, during love-making, they were contaminated by their men's semen. Miscarriages, uterine cancer, sterility, deformed children, nervous depression were some of the effects. The list is long but the consequences go beyond the mere question of health.
