Les Etrusques, un voyage interrompu
The Etruscans were a mysterious people settled in Italy before the Romans. Traces of their existence are visible notably in the richly painted tombs, the remains of a port and their original language. A true sea-faring people, the Etruscans were recognized for their commercial activity throughout the Mediterranean. In february 1999, during prospection near Giens, a COMEX company robot located an Etruscan wreck in 70 meters of water. The site is intact, and consists of a ship laden with 200 amphoras, at rest in the depth for more than 2500 years. Archeologists from the DRASSM will have the opportunity to explore the wreck. But the depth of the site requires a completly automated investigation. This intervention in deep water will mark a considerable step forward both historically and technologically.
