Le Pays des hommes modestes: des Mennonites au Belize
You never hear of Belize, the smallest of Central American nations. That probably is why the Mennonites, a religious group close to the Amish, settled here in 1958. Today, the Mennonite communities of Belize are very diverse. Some refuse to have running water, electricity and motors. Others, on the contrary, have taken to modern technology. Then there are the most recent communities, the result of the conversion of the local Creole and Maya Indian populations. The Mennonites of Belize, filmed here for the first time, reveal their society of discretion and isolation. This film gives the floor to individuals. They talk about their strong convictions but also about their clash with the modern world and the doubts it raises. Their point of view, which runs counter to actual trends, invites us to consider our own way of life.
