Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges
Joseph Boulogne, The Chevalier de St. Georges, sometimes called the "black Mozart" or the "Voltaire of music," is one of the major forgotten figures of the French 18th century. A mulatto, he was born in Guadeloupe to a black slave girl and a aristocratic plantation owner, this exceptional man was multi-faceted: refined composer, virtuoso violinist, renowned conductor, outstanding swordsman known throughout Europe, seasoned warrior, feared seducer, a rival of Mozart's in Paris, the first black Freemason. A star of Enlightenment society, he was inexplicably forgotten after his death in 1799. The film documents his extraordinary career and, two centuries later, lays the foundation for his indispensable rehabilitation.
