La Police des années noires
From the debacle of 1940 to the Liberation –the French police endured one of the most troubled periods of its history. In the service of the Vichy government, it became the indispensable ally of the Germans and their policy of repression. This is the first documentary on the role played by the French police under the Occupation. It examines the abuses of this institution, but also the acts of resistance in which some nameless policemen risked their lives. Despite these isolated acts, the French police followed the path of shame and dishonor as it took part in the persecution of Jews and Communists. The film exposes the mechanisms and options that brought a Republican institution to the edge of the abyss.
