Victor Marchand, a rich widower, has been mysteriously murdered in his manor house. He was found dead in his library, his head smashed in by a bowling ball. Lieutenant Brun, a disillusioned cop, learned that the three suspects, the bursar, the cook and the butler, are closely linked to the victim's family. Moreover, since his wife committed suicide and his daughter disappeared, the old man had no legal heir.
