La Deuxième Vérité
In Larches, a northern French city on the Belgian border, the body of a 17-year-old girl, Lucie Forest, is found--strangled on her way home from a evening with some girlfriends. A young Lille police captain, Paul Verrier, is dispatched to question two suspects, caught on the scene of the crime. Verrier is surprised at the haste of local police inspector Morini to call the case closed. Gradually, Verrier realizes that the crime perturbs a good part of the town population, concerned about preserving the fine reputation provided by its basketball club and its star player, Nicolas Misravic. Strangely, that's when a former examining magistrate offers to help Verrier. Judge Gravenoire, who retired to Larches some years back, is a strange individual who has been living alone with his governess since the accidental death of his wife and daughter. Imperceptibly, he orients Verrier to follow certain trails the investigation would normally not have bothered with. But in this game where every minute counts, who is manipulating whom? What secrets is the city trying to keep hidden? Who was Lucie Forest, really? And most of all: who murdered her?
