L'Anima in luce
Acclaimed as one of the greatest tresses of all time, Eleonora Duse was born in Italy in 1885 and died in the Unites States in 1924. The daughter of two traveling actors, Eleonora had never had schooling. And yet, she not only became the idol of simple people all over the world, she was also adored by all the great writers and poets and artists of her time--from Chekhov to Bernard Shaw, from Pirandello to James Joyce, to Rilke, to Isadora Duncan and to Charlie Chaplin who championed her in an article "the perfect artist". She was also visited by Lee Strasberg, the founder of the Actor's Studio, where the Duse style is still studied today. As for her private life, she had various passionate affairs. The most legendary and fiery was with Gabriele d'Annunzio.
