Killing the Word
At first, "Killing the Word" was a piece for trumpet and four percussion instruments composed by American jazzman Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson. It was performed for the first time on May 27, 2000 at the SWR-Culture Festival "Von Vier bis Vier" by Nelson (trumpet) and Franz Lang, Horst Friedel, Jochen Schorer and Philippe Ohl (percussions). According to Nelson, the piece is meant for those with the courage to seek and speak the truth whatever pressures they may under. For this long music clip, director Bernhard Foos composed images corresponding to the sounds, rhythm and melody. He notably plays up the omnipresence of the word "no" in Nelson's jazz compositions, which appear visually on the screen in 30 different languages.
