The present day. An elderly man and a woman in her fifties meet at the latter's home to go over the correspondence that their respective fathers had maintained during the years 1932-34. The two men had been friends and partners in an art gallery in New York. One of them, a German, returned to his homeland in 1932, answering the siren call of Nazism. The other, a Jew, remained in the United States. There was a woman between them. She was the former mistress of one and the younger sister of the other. She died in 1934 because her former lover didn't lift to finger to save her.
