Family Files
There is a small village called Ruopsa in Lapland. A long time ago my great-grandfather, Oskari Soppela, settled in the village, where he built a house he named Heimola. He married Eriika and they had six daughters and four sons. One of the daughters was called Helvi. She had a son, Kari. He is my father. One of the sons was Eero. His son, Pekka, was my age. Kari grew up in Heimola, which was a home for one big family. Eero and his family lived there, too. I will tell you their stories, the stories of Heimola, over five generations. Helvi died in 1989. I found her photos and letters in 1996, put away in a box in storage. I read the letters many times. They opened a mystifying world of fates, patterns of life and death. The patterns were to be repeated.
