Du vent dans le voile
Sanaa, the capital of the Republic of Yemen, has just celebrated the 12th anniversary of the reunification of North and South Yemen. This film deals with the crusade of the rebellious young urban Yemenite women for change in the status of women in this still traditional society where customs, Islam and modernity overlap. Filmed at their place of work or in private, their faces veiled or bared, they speak out on the question of the veil, making some surprising and contrasted arguments, thus shaking up many of our stereotyped images of them. More generally, these young women speak of their daily struggle to win their freedom. In their determination to make a place for themselves as individuals in a society where women must remain anonymous in public, by speaking out in a society where women must remain silent, our heroines defy taboos. But their combat comes at a price... The queen of Sabaa and the queen Arwa account for Yemen's past splendors. Are their ghosts concealed beneath the dark veils of this new millennium's rebels?
